Indooroopilly - Yelangi
Established in 1977 to service the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, Yelangi is a Creche and Kindergarten Association affiliated Kindergarten and Pre-School centre. It is administered and managed by the local Indigenous community.
The Pre-School currently services approximately 50 children, and their families who come from all areas of Brisbane.
The organisation is closely linked with and supported by other key Government Departments, including Queensland Health, Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy, Education Queensland, the Commission for Children and Young People and the Department of the Premier and Cabinet. These agencies have all been involved in the cross-government discussions initiated by Yelangi and the community.
The provision of funding to the Elder Coordinator position will ensure the successful operation of a strategy to secure safety, improve well-being and empower Indigenous children from an early age and their families to succeed in a school and social system. The existing Pre-school is a natural core on which to extend, expand and integrate other support mechanisms and service responses.
Triennial funding of $64,396 is provided for a full-time Elder position and to assist with operating costs.
