Representation of Indigenous children

The department is committed to addressing the many challenges associated with the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in the child protection system.

As such, addressing the child protection needs of Indigenous children and young people is a priority for the department which aims to provide these children with safe, stable and secure placements.

To assist in providing the most culturally appropriate service to Indigenous children and young people in the child protection system, the department works with recognised entities (independent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations) when formulating significant decisions affecting this group.
