Centenary of care for children was published in 1979 by the then Department of Children's Services to mark one hundred years of government services to families in Queensland.
The Orphanages Act of 1879 established the Office of the Inspector of Orphanages. This office grew to become the State Children Department established in 1911, the forerunner of the present Department of Child Safety established nearly a century later in 2004. In the interim the department had many titles, including Children's Services (from 1966), Family Services (from 1987), Families, Youth and Community Care (from 1996), and Families (from 2001).
This publication provides an historical record of departmental services such as foster care, adoption, and institutional care.
Researchers and people working on family histories may find the information and photographs of interest.
