How to request non-identifying medical information
An adopted person can make a written request for non-identifying medical information and forward it to Adoption Services Queensland.
Non-identifying medical information is information about a person's medical background. It does not include information about the person's identity or anything that would enable the person to be identified.
A birth parent may write to Adoption Services Queensland providing up-to-date family medical information to be passed on to their son or daughter who was adopted.
An adopted person may write to Adoption Services Queensland providing medical information to be passed on to his or her birth relative.
Adoption Services Queensland will contact the adopted person or birth relative to see if they would like to receive the information.
What happens after the request is made?
Upon receipt of a written request, Adoption Services Queensland will contact the adopted person's birth parent or other biological relative to ask them to provide up-to-date family medical information so it can be passed on to the adopted person.
Adoption Services Queensland has the authority to contact people involved, regardless of whether a contact statement prevents people from directly asking for, or providing, the information themselves.
When medical information is provided, it is forwarded to the adopted person. At the request of the adopted person or their biological relative, Adoption Services Queensland may give the information to a nominated medical practitioner, or directly to that person.
Birth parents and adopted people are not obliged to provide, or to accept, up-to-date family medical information if they do not wish to do so.
