Traveston Crossing Dam
The proposed Traveston Crossing Dam will be located 16 kilometres south of Gympie in the Mary River catchment. Covering approximately 9,800 hectares at full capacity, it will be the second largest dam (after Wivenhoe Dam) servicing the state's south east. The first stage of the dam will be constructed by the end of 2011, with the second stage to be completed by 2035, if required. At the completion of stage one, the Traveston Crossing Dam will deliver an additional 70,000 megalitres of water a year.
Information and assistance
The Department of Communities has established a one stop shop at Kandanga, staffed by a manager and community development officer. A referral service to other government agencies' programs and services is also available.
Services which can be accessed at the one stop shop include:
- personal and financial individual support for community members on-site and on an outreach basis through Lifeline, with a particular focus on stress management and personal coping strategies
- technical information relating to the dam proposal through access to maps and referral to Queensland Water Infrastructure, and
- referral assistance for individuals to access other government services including assistance to workers who have lost or will lose employment as a result of the proposed dam, small business advice and other relevant government programs and services available to affected residents and businesses.
The range and type of services delivered at the one stop shop will be regularly reviewed to ensure they continue to meet the needs of the community. Regular updates to government services will be also available.

Regional Services Forum
The Regional Services Forum has been established on the Sunshine Coast to provide a whole-of-government response to Mary Valley communities affected by the announcement to build the Traveston Crossing Dam.
Chaired by the Regional Executive Director, Sunshine Coast Region, Department of Communities, the forum is comprised of senior officers from State Government agencies in the region who meet regularly to discuss issues concerning residents and businesses in the Mary Valley, exchange up to date information on programs and services provided to the affected communities and consider short, medium and long-term strategies to ensure that issues are mitigated. A representative of the Community Futures Task Force attends forum meetings to ensure that regional issues which are brought to the attention of the task force are addressed.
