2008 award recipients
Winners of the 2008 Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Workforce Development were announced at a presentation ceremony in Brisbane on 18 November 2008.
Five categories of awards were presented. Award recipients in each category are listed below:
Effective Leadership by a Board of Management
This award recognises a board or management committee that has demonstrated excellence in initiating and overseeing activities to enhance workforce development.
- Open, regional and Indigenous award: Northern Peninsula Area Women’s Shelter Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation, Bamaga
- Medium sized award: Graham House Community Centre Association, East Murgon
- Highly commended award: Atherton Neighbourhood Centre Corporation, Atherton
- Highly commended award: Cootharinga Society of North Queensland, Currajong
Encouraging a Learning Culture
This award recognises fresh, original approaches to promoting a culture of learning in the workplace. A learning culture is created by ongoing activities and enduring processes that generate enthusiasm for discovering and sharing new skills and knowledge.
- Open award: Hinchinbrook Community Support Centre Incorporated, Ingham
- Regional award: Rural Lifestyle Options Association Incorporation, Beaudesert
- Small organisations award: Recreation, Independence and Socialisation in the Community (RISC Association), Brisbane
- Highly commended award: Multi-Link Community Services Incorporated, Logan Central
Culturally Inclusive Practices
This award recognises strategies and actions that actively promote cultural inclusiveness in relation to workforce development. It is an opportunity for organisations to demonstrate workforce development practices that have increased their staff’s capacity to respond to cultural diversity.
- Open, regional and Indigenous award: Northern Peninsula Area Women’s Shelter Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation, Bamaga
- Highly commended award: Immigrant Women’s Support Services, Brisbane
Collaborative Achievement
This award recognises organisations that collaborate to carry out workforce development practices. These organisations see the value in combining resources, ideas and energy to provide more efficient and effective workforce development practices.
- Open awards: Link-in Association (Sunshine Coast) Incorporated, Maroochydore
- Regional award: Abused Child Trust (ACT for Kids), North Queensland
- Small organisations award: Granite Belt Support Services, Stanthorpe
- Highly commended award: Lifeline Coral Coast Capricorn, Bundaberg
- Highly commended award: Northern Peninsula Area Women’s Shelter Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation, Bamaga
Sector Recognition
This award differs from the other four categories as it provides opportunities for organisations to nominate another organisation rather than themselves. It enables them to recognise peer organisations that have shown outstanding commitment to creating a robust community and disability services sector through positive workforce development practices.
Sector Recognition award recipients were:
- Regional and Indigenous award: Juwarki Kapu-Lug Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation, Rockhampton
- Small organisation award: North West Isolated Care, Mt Isa
- Highly commended award: Cootharinga Society of North Queensland, Currajong
