Suicide prevention
The Department of Communities is one of 11 Queensland Government agencies responsible for implementing initiatives under the Queensland Government Suicide Prevention Strategy 2003-2008.
The strategy aims to reduce rates of suicide and suicide attempts in the Queensland population, particularly among known priority groups such as Indigenous people, young people, older people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people in custody, people with a mental illness and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
Initiatives undertaken by the Department of Communities cover a broad spectrum of interventions, from projects with a focus on prevention and early intervention to those focused on bereavement following suicide.
On behalf of the Queensland Government, the Department of Communities led the development of the Queensland Suicide and Self-Harm Prevention Conference 2006: Sharing learnings from practice and research, which was held on 30-31 March 2006 at The Mercure Hotel Brisbane.
A manual on 'Suicide and Self-Harm Prevention training and professional development opportunities in Queensland' is available from the Resources page on this site.
