Educate yourself

Domestic and family violence presents in many forms and can occur in all types of relationships. Know the signs.

Act as 1 this Christmas

The Christmas period can often be a time of increased tensions and an escalation in domestic and family violence incidences due to financial strain, families spending more time together, and increased alcohol consumption. Here are some tips to avoid conflict and help you and your loved ones remain safe this holiday season.

  • Be aware of the signs of domestic and family violence.
  • Plan for your (and your children's) safety.
  • Think about items you need to take in the event you need to leave quickly such as medicines, identification papers etc.
  • If you know someone you think might be experiencing domestic and family violence find out how you can help
  • If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic and family violence, there is free and confidential support available. Call the DVConnect Womensline on 1800 811 811 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) for support including access to a safe place.  Men can contact DVConnect Mensline service on 1800 600 636 (9am to midnight, 7 days a week).
  • If you think you or your children are in immediate danger contact the police on 000 (triple zero) or ask someone else to contact them for you.

Act as 1

Domestic and family violence affects women, men, children, families, neighbours, workplaces and communities. It is estimated to cost the Queensland economy $2.7 to $3.2 billion annually.

The Act as 1 campaign is gathering community support to bring domestic and family violence out from behind closed doors. The Act as 1 message is a call to neighbours, friends, family members, work colleagues and community members to take a stand against domestic and family violence and support those affected.

You may know someone who is experiencing domestic and family violence. You can be the 1 to make a difference!
