Queensland Government
Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services

The Northern Outlook has been in operation since 2006 and is situated at a temporary site at 2/143 Buchan Street, Bungalow Far North Queensland Region. It is 5 minutes from Cairns city centre.

The Northern Outlook Community Training and Adventure Based Learning Centre is a Department of Communities' initiative to help build stronger communities. We do this by providing training for youth and community workers who wish to use Adventure Based Learning (ABL) in their work with young people.

The Northern Outlook supports prevention and early intervention strategies using ABL methods and techniques.

ABL provides young people with unique opportunities to reflect on their behaviour, values and choices and consider constructive ways to learn and grow.

It can include a range of activities and expeditions such as canoeing, hiking, challenge ropes courses, sea kayaking, abseiling and rock climbing. The Northern Outlook assists agencies to access adventure based training, resources and support services and to engage positively with young people and their families.

Our clients

Our clients are government and non-government agencies and their staff that provide prevention and early intervention focused youth and community services.

Our programs

Our programs are designed to support positive behavioural change for vulnerable young people. We do this by providing high quality training and support services for agency staff to develop, deliver and evaluate effective group programs.

Programs are individually designed in partnership with our clients to meet planned objectives.

Group programs range in duration from one day to 10 day expeditions.
