Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) Queenslanders

The department is committed to considering sexuality and gender identity issues when developing departmental policies, programs and services.

In line with this commitment, the department established a Round Table and released an LGBTI Commitment Statement (PDF, 64 KB) LGBTI Commitment Statement (RTF, 11 KB).

Working with LGBTI communities

The department's Engaging Queenslanders: a guide to working with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) communities (PDF, 479 KB) Engaging Queenslanders: a guide to working with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) communities (RTF, 521 KB) is now available.

An addition to the existing suite of Engaging Queenslanders resources, the guide will help public sector staff to better understand how to engage LGBTI people and develop and implement LGBTI-inclusive programs.

The guide and its complementary quick guide (PDF, 118 KB) quick guide (RTF, 52 KB), which were developed by the department in collaboration with the LGBTI Round Table, reinforce the department's commitment to fair, cohesive and equitable services for LGBTI Queenslanders.

LGBTI Round Table - call for nominations

Would you like to make a difference to the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex Queenslanders?

The Department of Communities is calling for nominations for four community members to be on the LGBTI Round Table in 2012.

This is an exciting opportunity to provide valuable advice and participate in decision-making on issues that affect LGBTI communities.

LGBTI Round Table

The LGBTI Round Table, consisting of 10 community representatives, provides advice to the Department of Communities on the experiences and concerns of LGBTI Queenslanders, their families and communities. The Round Table has been extended into 2012 and the department is committed to ensuring an intersex person joins the Round Table to highlight the views and experiences of intersex Queenslanders.

The LGBTI Round Table progresses actions against key priority areas including:

  • suicide and self-harm
  • stigma and discrimination
  • engagement with community services
  • consultation with LGBTI community, and
  • community infrastructure mapping.

Round Table members have already provided input into the department's domestic violence and multicultural policy reviews, the Queensland Government's 10-year plan for supporting Queenslanders with a disability, and the Queensland Strategy for Reducing Homelessness 2011-14.
