Youth Training Incentive

Youth Training Incentives are offered by the Queensland Government. It gives students an additional pathway into employment by combining education and training towards a qualification in the career of their choice. It is particularly designed for young people who would otherwise be unlikely to pursue direct entry into tertiary education after senior school.

Young people can study for their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), acquire government-approved and accredited training qualifications – and be paid while doing so. When they finish, they will have their QCE or equivalent, and be well on the way towards a qualification in their chosen career.

A subsidy of up to $1,100 (GST inclusive) is available to Queensland private sector employers for when they employ an eligible school-based apprentice or trainee.

The $1100 (including GST) incentive is payable after eighteen months of employment if the:

  • training contract has been continued due to the employee completing school i.e. converting to full-time or part-time status
  • employee is still employed with the same employer in some other capacity (must be employed for a minimum of 15 hrs per week)
  • employee has completed their school-based apprenticeship or traineeship.

Public sector employers

Local Government Authorities and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Councils can access Youth Training Incentives each financial year through a funding agreement with the Queensland Government.
