Colin Alchin has probably lost count of the number of nippers he has coached in surf lifesaving and surf sports over the past 37 years.
This 74-year-old stalwart of the Currumbin Surf Lifesaving Club has held many voluntary positions with the club since joining in 1971. As deputy president, gear steward, fundraiser, social organiser and clubhouse director he has helped the club grow and provide a healthy program of outdoor activities for its younger members.
Colin is a familiar face at junior branch carnivals. In fact, he has not missed one in 37 years. He has volunteered his time and skills as an official and referee at most of the branch's senior carnivals as well.
He has also volunteered his time at many surf lifesaving inter-branch titles, junior state titles and Australian titles over the years.
But it is local junior lifesavers that have benefitted most from Colin's volunteering and for which he was recognised with a citation of merit from the International Lifesaving Federation in 2002.
Highly respected by clubs within the Point Danger branch Colin has shown an unwavering commitment to the Gold Coast's youth through surf lifesaving.
