Location: Kewarra, North Queensland
Carmel, 81, has contributed to the community since the 1950s, during which time she has held a number of volunteering posts in Mareeba and Cairns, including with the Lions Club, the Catholic Women's League and Meals on Wheels.
She has spent her adult life seeing people in need and doing her best to help them. Her life philosophy is "I love all people and I work at it".
Her volunteer work for the Lions Club involved a community farming project which raised funds for many important causes, including a wheelchair for a young child and building apartments for pensioners.
Carmel also established the St Vincent de Paul Society for the Northern Beaches, north of Cairns, and currently helps elderly residents settle into a serviced apartment village in Kewarra. She also assists with the Cairns Lord Mayor's Christmas hamper collection and distribution.
