After her husband's death in 2005, and with no children or living siblings, Laurie set up the Cowled Foundation to help women in Queensland's rural areas to achieve their goals in tertiary education.

Laurie, 81, has created scholarships in numerous areas of study including geography, architecture, education, creative arts and brain research.

She has also set up an Indigenous scholarship with the University of Technology Sydney. In honour of her sister who sadly passed away at age 24, Laurie established a special Ruth Cowled Memorial Scholarship in Stage Design.

Laurie is also supporting three aspiring ballerinas from regional Queensland to attend the Australian Ballet School in Sydney and has provided funds for healthy meals for design students at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA).

On top of all this, Laurie has been the Walkers' Co-coordinator for the past 13 years organising monthly walks for Probus members. She is also the club historian and produced a booklet of the first 10 years of the Probus club in 2006.
