The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Award recognises an innovative and exceptional project or activity that has contributed to the prevention of domestic and family violence and enhanced the safety of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities.
Winner: Charleville Police District on collaboration with community agencies.
For: The Australia Day Spectacular Hit DV for 6
Organisers of Hit DV 4 6 cricket competition were recognised for their role in raising awareness about domestic and family violence and promoting positive relationships among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Charleville community.
The event was very successful in engaging the local Indigenous community, with strong support from Indigenous organisations and many local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people taking part in the competition. Domestic and family violence services were on hand to provide information and advice and people could participate in culturally-inclusive activities to demonstrate their commitment to ending this type of violence.
Hit DV 4 6 also served to improve relationships between the local Indigenous community and Charleville Police while encouraging everyone involved to adopt a zero tolerance attitude to domestic and family violence.
Organisers hope to make Hit DV 4 6 a regular event to enable them to continue spreading the message that domestic and family violence is not acceptable in Charleville.
Hit DV 4 6 also won the Primary Prevention Award.
