Youth Week grants

The Queensland Government made $75 000 available to organisations across each of the seven regions to host events and activities to celebrate Youth Week 2012. Twenty six organisations were successful in securing a total of $75 000 in funding.

South West Region $10 000 (five events)

Care Goondiwindi Association Inc received $3000 to host ‘The Skate Competition’ which will be held during Youth Week and will involve young people aged 12 to 25 years from Goondiwindi, Warwick, Milmerran, Inglewood, Yelarbon, Texas and Toobeah.  The event will aim to strengthen the leadership, team work and planning skills of young people responsible for the planning and promotion of this event. The skating performance of young people will be judged by pro skateboarders who will mentor and coach young people on the day.  This event is anticipated to be the start of an ongoing skateboard competition in Goondiwindi.

Southern Downs Regional Council received $1000 to conduct VOICE (Vocalising Opinions Incorporating Cultures and Enhancing participation), a survey of local young people in the southern downs regional council area. VOICE aims to give young people within the Southern Downs Regional Council area a voice on youth achievements and issues.  Surveys on youth issues and needs will be conducted through local media, target schools and the community. The survey results will be disseminated to youth specific services, youth councils and the wider community to assist in planning future events for young people.  Furthermore Southern Downs Regional Council will host an awards night will be held during Youth Week to recognise and celebrate the contributions of local young people in the Southern Downs Regional Council area.

Householders' Options to Protect the Environment Inc received $1600 to conduct the Building Youth Sustainability Leadership Forum’ during Youth Week 2012.  The forum aims to teach secondary students from the Darling Downs Region, including those from regional and rural localities, the foundations of good leadership through discussion, reflection, team building and networking.  These young people will be invited to participate and share their understanding of sustainability issues with like minded peers.  A short video will be produced showcasing forum highlights for promotion via social media.  It is intended that the forum will become an annual event through the formation of a Darling Downs School Sustainability Coalition.

Westside Community Care (Qld) Limited received $1500 to host Walk it Out 2012’, a multicultural youth event celebrating the talents of young people in Springfield and surrounding areas through participation in workshops.  The workshops aim to encourage young people to gain confidence and instil an ability to manage challenges.

Empire Theatre Projects Pty Ltd received $2900 to host Film Out Loud’. The Empire Theatre Youth Arts, in collaboration with Toowoomba Flexi School, will deliver a series of creative arts and film making workshops to at risk, young people aged 13 to 17 years.  The workshop theme 'Say what you need to say to the world' will focus on creative arts processes, content creation and skill building in both performance and film making techniques, with the end goal of creating a thirty minute documentary to be premiered in the Empire Church Theatre during National Youth Week 2012.

North Coast Region $10 000 (three events)

Sunshine Coast Youth Partnership Inc received $4160 to host the ‘Raw Festival’. The ‘RAW Festival’, will be an alcohol and drug free music event held at Lake Kawana Centre on Saturday 14 April 2012. A group of approximately 30 young people will be involved in the planning, delivery and evaluation of the event and a further 40 young people will be involved as performers, presenters and volunteers at the event.

IFYS Limited received $3800 to host ‘Beerwah Live’. The Beerwah District Youth and Community Centre will be holding a live music event at the Sportsground, Roberts Road, Beerwah. The event will feature local young musicians from local high schools and the community, and will also feature a young headlining band from the area. Young people from the Beerwah Region will be involved in the organisation of the event including the selection of performers, sound tech, and advertising.

Pomona & District Community House Inc received $2040 to host ‘Out There and Loving It’. Pomona and District Community House will be holding four circus based workshops, culminating in a performance.   The workshops, facilitated by a local artist will consist of clowning, juggling, hula hoops and unicycling.  The event will be held at the Lawson Shed/Pomona Memorial Hall in Pomona during Youth Week 2012.

South East Region $10 000 (four events)

Queensland Police-Citizens Youth Welfare Association received $2500 to host the ‘Crestmead Annual Outdoor Spectacular (CAOS)’. The event aims to celebrate the diverse creative talents of young people and to invite wider community participation. It aims to celebrate the positive contributions young people make to the community.

The Gold Coast Drug Council Inc received $2500 to host the ‘Inter Urban Arts Program - United by Stylz: Imagine Create Inspire’. United By Stylz is a youth theatre project run by young people for young people, supported by youth and youth arts professionals. 

Village Community Services Inc received $2500 to host the ‘Northern Gold Coast Youth Week Showcase’. This youth event will be held during National Youth Week 2012 to promote, engage, celebrate and support young people through showcasing a range of activities and services for young people.

The Uniting Church in Australia Property Trust (Q) for and on behalf of Wesley Mission Brisbane received $2500 to host their event ‘Celebrating our Sexually and Gender Diverse Youth Project’. The project will provide three components including brainstorming and planning, a camp during National Youth Week 2012, and a Gold Coast Gay Day youth zone.

Central Queensland Region $10 000 (four events)

Community Connect Fraser Coast Inc received $3000 to host the ‘Fraser Coast Youth Festival’. Young people will be supported to implement a festival to show case their talent through cultural dance, participating in team building activities and promoting the importance of looking after their mental health issues. Activities will include a rock wall, zorb ball, local band, community mosaic, candle making, beading and a bike and skate competition. Approximately 30 young people including those from diverse cultural backgrounds and at risk groups will be involved with the planning and implementation of the project. A further 120 young people and family members are expected to assist with running the festival.  The Youth Strength and Support Festival is an event by and for young people of Wide Bay.

Monto Community Development Council Inc received $2000 to host ‘Portr8 Cr8 Motiv8’. The grant will be used to assist young people to plan, implement and participate in one of the six Prtr8, Cr8, Motiv8 (portrait, create, motivate) one day events in the North Burnett. The submission aims to capture all young people who are aged between 12-25 years.  Young people will be provided with opportunities to portrait their community through the form of media, creative arts and craft activities and be motivated to develop skills that enhance their self confidence.  Young people will assist with promoting the event through media advertising and the use of social networking in a positive way.

Gladstone Regional Council received $1500 to host ‘Let it Out - Youth celebrating their way’. Young people will be involved in all aspects of planning and managing the 10 day event. Youth Workers and staff from numerous organisations will provide young people with support to see their ideas become a reality and gain experience in event planning and management. This collaborative activity aims to provide all communities in the Gladstone Region with activities to participate in during National Youth Week 2012.

Blackall-Tambo Regional Council received $3500 to host ‘Tambo Stock Show’. A youth committee will drive the development of workshops to create art for the showcase (which will be delivered by young people). The project will target young people in the community who are at risk, suffer low self esteem or have limited opportunities to express themselves.  This is a collaborative project between Blackall-Tambo Regional Council and Human Ventures.

Brisbane Region $10 000 (three events)

Queensland Program of Assistance for Survivors of Torture & Trauma Assn Inc received $6000 to host ‘Walk in Our Shoes’. The Walk in Our Shoes project was developed by young people during 2011 Queensland Youth Forum, and is coordinated by the Youth Voice Steering Committee which comprises of 20 young people aged 17-26. The Walk in Our Shoes program aims to promote social inclusion and engagement in Brisbane.

Inala Youth Care Community Inc received $2000 to host the ‘Brisbane South Region Youth Event’. The event will be a celebration of local sporting, artistic and musical talent in the Inala and surrounding communities. Performances will include local hip hop and rap artists who participated in the annual 2011 Stylin Up Event.

Brisbane City Council received $2000 to fund their Youth Management Team. Brisbane City Council's Youth Team intends to facilitate a Youth Management Team (YMT) to work from Visible Ink in Fortitude Valley. The YMT will support and coordinate various events during National Youth Week April 2012. Funding will provide for a representative from each event to engage as a group to network, share ideas, share resources, support each other, gain skills in social media marketing such as writing media releases, marketing tools and contract writing.

Far North Queensland Region $10 000 (three events)

Douglas Shire Community Services Association Inc received $2882 to host ‘Youth Week Mossman 2012’.  ‘Youth Week Mossman 2012’ will comprise a number of events including a photographic exhibition showcasing photographs taken by young people, and will include an exhibition opening for family and friends; an after school athletics carnival; and midnight basketball, which will include a BBQ dinner.

Industry Education Networking Pty Ltd received $3935 to host ‘Imagine Arts Create Crafts Inspire Culture Camp’. A two day Indigenous arts, crafts and culture camp will be run at North Queensland Clump Mountain, Mission Beach for 16 young people (and their carers) who are living in out of home residential care with Industry Education Networking Pty Ltd.  Participants will come from areas including Cairns, Atherton, Townsville, Gladstone, Biloela, Mt Isa and Weipa.

Catholic Education Services Cairns received $3183 to host a ‘Set Plan Camp’. A camp for 50 Year 10 Indigenous students from the seven Catholic Colleges in Cairns will to provide the opportunity for participants to benefit from pathways information, communication, problem solving and team work skills development. The camp will provide insight into the importance of making career choices, and planning for the future.

North Queensland Region $15 000 (four events)

Queensland Police Citizens Youth Welfare Association (Whitsunday Branch) received $3500 to host the ‘Whitsunday Youth Sport & Recreation Expo’. The primary aim of the Youth Expo is to bring together youth agencies from the community amongst an array of engaging and interactive activities and events, creating an opportunity for young people to come together, become aware of what is on offer for them within their community, and ideally become linked with the variety of providers on show.

Charters Towers Regional Council received $3500 to host ‘Charters Towers Youth Festival - Imagine, Create and Inspire: We are the WORLD’. The festival will be held over 6 days, engaging young people in the planning as well as the management of the project.  The project offers a youth focused festival where arts, culture, health, personal wellbeing and performance activities will be on display. Activities and workshops will include a well being expo, photography and art exhibition, concert, and sports day. The project aims to inspire shock, challenge and empower over 1500 local youth in the region, as well as give the broader community a visual encounter of the talent of their young people.

Community Solutions Incorporated received $3000 to host Mackay's Got Talent. A committee of young people will coordinate and engage in all aspects of organising the event. Young people involved will gain a wide range of skills and work collaboratively with community organisations. The event will also engage young people though participation in the competition and will showcase the talents of young people to the wider community.

Youth With A Mission - Reef To Outback Association Inc received $5000 to host ‘YWAM – Youth Street Event: “I Want to Live”. YWAM Youth Street is a program which supports youth culture through skateboarding, music, media, art, dance and sports. The ‘I Want To Live’ event will be a large scale night where youth aged 12 to 25 will come and celebrate the joys of being a youth. The event will host live bands, motivational speakers, and activities promoting the core message ’I Want to Live’. This event will encourage young people from Townsville to live life to the fullest, by not just watching things pass them by, but really going after their dreams.
