Youth Week 2011 funded events

The Queensland Government made $70 000 available to organisations across each of the seven regions to host events and activities to celebrate Youth Week 2011. Twenty four organisations were successful in securing a total of $68,366 in funding.

South West Region $10 000 (three events)

Community Development Services Inc received $4000 to host VOICE - Vocalising Opinions, Incorporating Cultures and Enhancing participation. VOICE gave young people in the region the opportunity to voice their concerns on youth issues which will be collated and distributed to assist local youth services and the wider community in the planning of future initiatives for young people. An awards night was also held to recognise and celebrate the contributions of local young people.

Left Right Think-Tank received $3200 to conduct Our Region - Our Future. This project gave young people in the South West region the opportunity to express issues of concern to them through workshops and surveys. Information gathered formed the agenda for a forum which invited up to fifty young people to speak directly on local youth issues to decision makers from local, state and federal governments.

Maranoa Regional Council received $2800 to host YouthFest Maranoa 2011. Youthfest was an outdoor youth concert held in Youth Week 2011 and featured demonstrations from Indigenous dance, hip hop groups and local professional artists. Young people were also entertained by traditional games, a fashion competition and cooking demonstrations just to name a few!

North Coast Region $9 596 (five events)

Pomona and District Community House Inc received $2420 to coordinate a skate boarding excursion and an entertainment event at the local skate park. The event included some great workshops and fun and healthy activities.

Sunshine Coast Youth Partnership Inc received $2500 to work closely with partner agencies and young people to develop and host the No Regrets Live Music and Outdoor Movie Showcase. This event promoted positive health messages and provided a great range of entertainment for young people in the community.

Lifeline Community Care received $1600 to host Homegrown. This Youth Week event celebrated the talents and involvement of young people. Homegrown included activities such as skating demonstrations and competitions.

Neighbourhood Centre Caboolture Inc received $1846 to work collaboratively with partner agencies to provide a range of fun entertainment for young people in the community.

Namtec Inc received $1230 to host Time to Shine. This project involved a series of creative and therapeutic arts based workshops leading up to an arts exhibition/competition launched and held during Youth Week 2011.

South East Region $10 000 (three events)

Gold Coast Youth Service Inc received $3000 to deliver the Create it - Own it project for young people, involving entertainment, workshops and the production of a short film during National Youth Week 2011.

Gold Coast Drug Council Inc received $3000 to host United by Stylz: Own It! Young people were trained in theatre and videography skills, and assisted to produce and present a performance based on the theme of National Youth Week 2011: 'Own It!'

Crestmead PCYC received $4000 to host the Crestmead Annual Outdoor Spectacular (CAOS). A number of youth services in the community were involved in organising the event which included a variety of activities and entertainment throughout the day.

Central Queensland Region $10 000 (two events)

South Burnett PCYC received $7500 to host the South Burnett PCYC Skateboard Competition. This event provided opportunities for young people to participate and also be involved in the planning, marketing and management of the event.

Neighbourhood Centre Maryborough Inc received $2500 to host the Maryborough Youth Achievement Awards. This ceremony recognised the achievements and hard work of young people in Maryborough and surrounding communities.

Brisbane Region $8 770 (two events)

4ZZZ FM Creative Broadcasters Ltd received $6770 to host Fluorescent Adolescentzzz, a multiple art form engagement project for young people. The project had an emphasis on emerging digital art forms, multi media and street art and finished with an all ages showcase. This project facilitated partnerships between community arts programs and young people in Brisbane.

Brisbane Youth Service Inc received $2000 to deliver a range of activities as part of their Celebrating Youth project. Activities include abseiling, canoeing and circus activities at Kangaroo Point. An event will also be held for young parents and their children which will include activities such as tie dying, story telling and baking.

Far North Queensland Region $10 000 (three events)

The Roman Catholic Trust Corporation for the Diocese of Cairns received $2100 to coordinate a Motivational/Leadership day for year 10 - 12 students from local catholic colleges. The activities aimed to enhance an individual's self confidence and esteem and develop group support, teamwork and communication skills.

Aurukun Shire Council received $5000 to host the Aurukun Youth Visioning Quest which was a project that offered young people in Aurukun the opportunity to engage with community leaders and develop a vision for their futures.

Tablelands Regional Council received $2900 to host the Herberton Barbeque and Dance. Young people were involved in the planning and management of the event which provided free entertainment for young people in the community.

North Queensland Region $10 000 (six events)

Burdekin Shire Council received $1771 to stage a Battle of the Bands competition for young bands in the local community to showcase their talents to the community.

Isaac Regional Council received $1771 to partner with youth services to develop and implement the Isaac Youth Ambassador Project. This project promoted leadership skills and provided opportunities for young people to discuss their views and concerns at workshops and discussion panels with local decision makers.

Charters Towers Regional Council received $1001 to host their youth Week project Own It! Do It! Say It! This event was a youth focused festival and included art and cultural activities, trade and industry displays, educational and sporting activities, and participation from youth support services.

Community Solutions Inc received $1771 to host Mackay's Got Talent. This event encouraged young people across the region to develop talent acts as individuals or as a group, and take part in the competition. A range of entertainment was available on the day for young people to celebrate Youth Week 2011.

Cloncurry Shire Council received $1915 to deliver their Youth Week event ‘We're gonna play - OUR WAY!' This event included a range of activities such as healthy living activities, forums and a disco for young people in the community.

Whitsunday PCYC received $1771 to host the Whitsunday Youth Sport and Recreation Expo. This open day of entertainment for young people included activities such as a skate competition, live music, interactive art workshops and fashion parades.
