About us
The Department of Communities is a Queensland Government agency that provides and supports a range of services that allow Queenslanders to have better life opportunities and engage with their community.
We work with non-government organisations, local communities, the private sector and other government departments to deliver services to people who are vulnerable or in need of support to help overcome difficulties they may be experiencing.
This includes:
- providing services for children and families
- supporting young people to achieve their full potential and providing youth justice services
- supporting seniors so they are valued and active members of their communities
- ensuring community and individual support services are delivered to vulnerable people experiencing difficulties
- promoting active and engaged communities
- coordinating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander policy, engagement and delivery of services
- providing services to people with multicultural needs
- facilitating access to government services.
The Department of Communities forms part of a larger portfolio of agencies that includes Disability Services Queensland, Smart Service Queensland and Multicultural Affairs Queensland.
Our department also has responsibility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander policy, residential and aged care and mental health strategy, policy and legislation.
