Minister
Warren Pitt is the Minister for Communities, Disability Services, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Seniors and Youth.
Warren Pitt returned to the Queensland Cabinet in February 2004 in the third Beattie Labor Government as Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors.
In the establishment of the new Department of Communities, Minister Pitt has set the focus firmly on service delivery to all regions in Queensland. In June 2004 he oversaw the provision of the historic first budget for the Department of Communities and the largest budget for disability-related services ever handed down in Queensland.
Minister Pitt was first elected to the Queensland Parliament as Member for Mulgrave in 1989 and continued in this role until 1995. In 1998 he was returned to Parliament and continues to act as the Local Member representing the electorate of Mulgrave.
Minister Pitt's previous parliamentary roles include: Minister for Business, Industry and Regional Development (1995); Government Whip (1992-93); Chair of the Scrutiny of Legislation Committee (2001-2004); Member of the Legal, Constitutional and Administrative Review Committee (2000-2001); and Chairman of the Premier's Northern and Rural Taskforce (1992-95).
A former teacher, army officer and army reservist, Minister Pitt has spent most of his life living in regional Queensland, where he has been a committed community worker. He continues to be actively involved in a range of community organisations within his electorate, including acting as the Chair of the Fretwell Park Sporting Association and Patron of Gordonvale Community Care. In 1983, Minister Pitt was named Mulgrave Shire Citizen of the Year in recognition of his substantial volunteer work.
An avid sportsman, Minister Pitt was an accomplished boxer in his youth and after finishing his years as a Rugby League player, continued his involvement with the sport as a referee for many years. He counts some of this year's sporting highlights as the North Queensland Cowboys' rise through the NRL ranks and young Innisfail man, Billy Slater, scoring one of the greatest individual tries in State of Origin history.
