Careers with the Department of Communities

“It’s a big department with so many different clients, so there are lots of great career opportunities.” Philip Wiley, Principal Project Officer

Who we are

The Department is a diverse, forward thinking human service delivery agency with lead responsibility in child care, child protection, domestic violence, seniors, youth, concessions for seniors, disaster recovery management and youth justice. Our organisation works closely with partners in the non-government and government sectors to provide a diverse range of high quality integrated human services and to develop and improve the associated community support infrastructure and networks.

At the Department of Communities we aim to create strong communities where all people are safe, valued and empowered, wherever they live, and whatever their circumstances.

Our goal is to improve the lives of Queenslanders and support developments that make our society more socially cohesive, fair and culturally vibrant.

We also provide support and funding that enables community organisations to make a difference in their communities.

Our jobs are as diverse as the clients we service, so we can offer a broad range of careers that can include administrative, professional, managerial and executive roles.

Many of our staff work directly with the community to deliver services that improve the lives of Queenslanders. We ensure quality in child care, assist with child protection, provide opportunities for youth and seniors, work to prevent domestic violence, provide concessions for seniors, rebuild communities after disasters, work with youths in the justice system, and facilitate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships.

Our important role

The Department of Communities is a large organisation with more than 2500 skilled staff and a $384.4 million budget. We work in all towns and cities throughout Queensland.

Eighty-three per cent of our staff provide services directly to clients, supported by head office staff who provide corporate support, such as policy and program development, human resources, training, review and evaluation and financial management.

As an organisation, we aim to continually improve the way we do business. We also seek to ensure that our staff have the right skills to provide the best service to meet community needs.

Whether you choose to follow a career path we offer or simply want to gain experience working in a dynamic, community-focused environment, the skills and knowledge you develop with the Department of Communities will be both personally and professionally rewarding.
