What does a community support officer (community and youth) do?
Community support officers promote and support the quality of community services for a range of client groups such as families, individuals, young people, seniors and children. They do this by:
- developing partnerships with local authorities, community organisations, care providers and members of disadvantaged groups
- negotiating service agreements with funded organisations
- supporting the administration of funding processes
- supporting the establishment and implementation of new services
- working with existing funded organisations
- supporting, monitoring and evaluating services.

What qualifications do you need?
Community support officers are employed from a range of backgrounds including human services, social work, psychology, education and health. While a tertiary background is valued it is not a prerequisite.
What personal attributes do you need?
The Department of Communities’ community support officers (community and youth) have:
- excellent verbal and written communication skills
- the ability to liaise, consult and form cooperative and purposeful relationships with government and community representatives
- the ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team
- mediation skills
- a passion for working with community services to improve service delivery.
