What does a youth justice case worker do?
A youth justice case worker works with young people aged between 10 and 17 years who have come into contact with the criminal justice system.
Case workers provide services from Youth Justice Service Centres, hubs and shared service centres located across Queensland.
As a youth justice case worker you will work with a range of community and government organisations to support and assist young people to complete the requirements of their youth justice orders. Your assessment and intervention skills will be invaluable in providing an integrated and culturally appropriate case management response.

Youth justice case workers also work closely with local Courts and legal professionals to assist in providing suitable advice and information in the sentencing of young people.
Overall, a youth justice case worker aims to provide adolescents and their families with the tools to create positive change in their lives and contribute more productively within their community.
What qualifications do you need?
The Department of Communities requires youth justice case workers to hold a degree in social work, the behavioural sciences or criminology from a recognised tertiary institution.
What personal attributes do you need?
The Department of Communities’ youth justice case workers have:
- an interest in the youth justice criminal justice system
- good written communication skills including the ability to produce legal reports and documents for courts
- good communication and rapport building skills
- keen assessment and problem-solving skills
- a passion for working with adolescents and their families
- an ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
