Queensland Seniors Council
The Queensland Seniors Council provides advice to the Minister for Communities, Seniors and Youth and the Queensland Government on issues relating to the development of policies, programs and services that impact on seniors and ageing.
The council:
- provides timely and expert advice to the Minister for Communities, Seniors and youth, and other relevant Ministers where appropriate, on matters relating to ageing
- provides advice to the Minister on current and emerging issues and concerns identified by the council in relation to ageing
- provides advice on specific issues at the Minister's direction.
Priorities
The council's 2008-2010 priorities will be informed by the new council. The council's 2005-2007 priority areas were:
- Social participation of older people and prevention of social isolation
- Active ageing – celebrating Queensland seniors
- Elder abuse prevention
- Blueprint for the Bush.
Council members
The Queensland Seniors Council is a representative council made up of:
- an independent Chair
- one older person from each of the ten Department of Communities regions
- two Aboriginal representatives
- one Torres Strait Islander representative
- a Department of Communities representative from the Office for Seniors.
Members hold the positions of Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson. Each member brings knowledge and expertise regarding seniors and ageing issues in their region and from the people they represent, as well as their own unique perspectives. Collectively the council reflects a range of perspectives of older people across Queensland.
Council meetings
Council meetings are generally held in Brisbane three times a year. Members keep in contact between meetings and are active in their regions throughout their term.
