Queensland Youth Council
The Queensland Youth Council provides a forum for the exchange of information and views between young people and the Queensland Government to assist in the development of policies, programs and services that impact on the lives of Queensland's young people.
The council provides advice to the Minister for Community Services and Housing on:
- policies, programs and services which impact on young people, as requested by the Minister
- current and emerging issues and concerns of importance to young people, as identified by the council
- issues impacting on young people specific to local and regional contexts.
The council also supports and monitors the development and implementation of Queensland Government policy in relation to young people.
Priorities
Priorities for the 2008-09 term are:
- youth homelessness for 17-year-olds and under
- youth violence
- youth justice
- safer 'Schoolies'
- school retention
- linking local, state and national consultation mechanisms
- youth health.
Council members
Membership of the council is open to young people aged 15 to 25 years. The council comprises two representatives from each of the Department of Communities' 10 regions. It also includes an ex-officio representative from the Office for Youth within the Department of Communities.
Each member contributes knowledge and expertise on issues relating to young people. They also contribute extensive knowledge of issues within the region they represent, as well as their own unique perspectives, to the advice provided to the Minister.
Council meetings
Council meetings are generally held in Brisbane three times a year. Members keep in contact between council meetings and are active in their regions throughout their term.
