Community Spirit: Second Edition (July 2005)

Message from the Director-General

From the very young to the elderly, all Queenslanders contribute in some way to their communities. With this in mind, this edition of Community Spirit has an inter-generational theme highlighting events and initiatives that are bringing together community members, regardless of their age, point of view, culture, lifestyle or religion.

Youth initiatives

A taste of democracy

Young people from across the Commonwealth got first-hand experience of how parliament works at the Commonwealth Youth Parliament held in Brisbane in April.

Youth Week around the state

Young people showcased their boundless creativity, talents, energy and enthusiasm to their local communities during a week that celebrated their contribution to community life.

Voices

In Voices, Community Spirit invites people from all walks of life to share their experience of community.

Domestic and family violence prevention

There's no excuse for abuse

Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month in May highlighted the damaging effects domestic and family violence can have on individuals and communities.

Violence prevention rewarded

After 23 years of working to prevent domestic and family violence, Heather Nancarrow, Director of the Queensland Centre for Domestic and Family Violence Research has been recognised for her outstanding commitment with the 2005 Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Award for an individual.

Crime prevention

Turnaround gives Michael a second chance

"I've had more support on the Turnaround Program than at any other point in my life." Getting support when he most needed it has helped one man get his life back on track.

Engaging communities

Communities grow with help from volunteers

Volunteers can make a difference to the life of someone else or, in the case of Indigenous community volunteers, an entire community.

Building communities through partnerships

Councils give stronger voice to Queenslanders with a disability

More than 90 Queenslanders have taken up the challenge of providing a stronger voice for people with a disability and better communication with government as members of the state's 10 new regional disability councils and Disability Council of Queensland.

Paul and Pascoe

My name is Paul Larcombe. I work in the National Disability Operations team of the Commonwealth Department of Family and Community Services in Brisbane. I am just another employee, but one with a special difference. I have a hairy friend, Pascoe, who accompanies me to work. Pascoe is my guide dog, and one of great character.

Exploring the future

"Thinking about the future can help us actively develop the future we prefer" Dr Sohail Inagatullah. If you think crystal ball gazing is a quaint but futile practice, think again.

Fostering community involvement

The latest round of Ministerial Regional Community Forums in April highlighted the diversity of Queensland 's regional areas. In this issue of Community Spirit we feature the Wide Bay Burnett and Mackay Whitsunday forums.

Blueprint for a thriving future

The Queensland Government and one of the state's peak agricultural bodies, AgForce Queensland, have joined forces on a project to help rural and regional communities secure a viable future.

Strong and sustainable prospects

Supporting a sustainable future for the non-government sector is the key aim of the Strengthening Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) project.

Improving access to services

Easier access to government . now that's Smart Service!

Queenslanders can now get many government services the smart way through Smart Service Queensland.

Celebrating seniors

Week of fun planned for seniors

Seniors Week will run from 20-28 August with an exciting program of events planned across the state.
