When more than 150 properties across Queensland were quarantined to prevent the spread of equine influenza it took a huge logistical effort to minimise the risk to hundreds of people facing loss of their livelihoods.

Perceptions of Ageing
Older people are living longer, healthier and more active lives but are often subjected to negative interpretations of ageing — sometimes being depicted as dependent, lonely or senile.

Young Queenslanders shape their future
More than 300 youth sector workers, government decision makers and young people from diverse backgrounds gathered to explore challenging topics, swap ideas and discuss issues such as education, Indigenous matters, living with a disability, leadership, health, drugs and alcohol, safe partying, cultural diversity, homelessness, recovering from trauma and volunteering.

Youth efforts prove monumental
The Calliope Shire Cemetery Restoration Project has involved young people on court orders in restoring and repairing many of the older graves in the monumental section of the cemetery.

Volunteer visitors build bridges
Social isolation is a reality for many young people in detention. Some enjoy regular family contact but a large number never get a visitor. A small band of volunteer visitors are attempting to fill the void and help isolated young people build bridges to the outside world where they will resume their lives.

Domestic violence prevention puts change on the cards
The Department of Communities’ annual Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Awards, now in their tenth year, recognise the inspiring and innovative work that is helping to prevent violence in our community and reduce the devastating impact it has on individuals and families.

Indigenous Sports Awards keeps legendary spirit alive
The awards, hosted by Indigenous Sports Queensland (ISQ) and sponsored by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Recreation and the Department of Communities, is part of ISQ’s vision to develop Indigenous sport in Queensland.

Department of Communities Youth Award
The Department of Communities’ Youth Award is named in honour of the late Leigh-Anne Goodwin to recognise her contribution to sport in Queensland.

New community services laws for Queensland
The passing of the Community Services Act 2007 by State Parliament on 23 August recognises the increasing growth and importance of Queensland’s community services industry.
