An all abilities sports day, a country hoedown and an art exhibition were just some of the many ways that Queenslanders celebrated Disability Action Week 2011 from 18 to 24 September.
Disability Action Week 2011 was launched at the Scouts Queensland Agoonoree, an annual week-long camp at Baden-Powell Park in Samford where more than 70 young people with a disability join scouts and guides to participate in activities.
Across Queensland, many communities came together to celebrate Disability Action Week by hosting events ranging from the small to the spectacular, with more than 90 events registered on the Disability Action Week online calendar.
Through the Building Supportive Communities grants program, the department supports community groups and organisations to stage their own events that strengthen the community’s capacity to welcome and include people with a disability in everyday life. This year $200,000 in funding was allocated to more than 50 organisations across Queensland.
A highlight of the week was the presentation of the Disability Action Week Awards at a gala dinner at the Cairns Convention Centre on Thursday 22 September.
The awards recognise individuals and organisations that have contributed to improving the quality of life for people with disability in Queensland. Twelve awards across eight categories were presented on the night.
More information about all of the winners is available in the Disability Action Week Awards section of the website.
