Award winner: Janelle Meek

Award winner: Janelle Meek

Janelle works at Doomadgee State School as a Special Needs Teacher. She has developed collaborative working relationships between teachers, Queensland Aboriginal Health specialists, parents, students and Education Queensland in order to identify students requiring special needs intervention or learning support.

As a result, a significant amount of cognitive, health and behavioural testing has been undertaken at Doomadgee State School. Janelle facilitated the Deadly Ears program at the school, resulting in the use of the Sound Field System across the school. Working with hearing support services and parents she has enabled student’s access to and regular use of hearing aid devices for children identified as suffering significant hearing loss.

Janelle has been instrumental in providing a flexible intervention programme that has at its cornerstone the right of every child to access an inclusive education regardless of their disability. Janelle consistently ensures her support programmes are designed to support inclusive learning within the context of group and individualised learning environments.
