Mackay District School helps create the student’s mosaic masterpiece.
A colourful mosaic located in the heart of the Iluka Park playground stands as a permanent symbol of local students’ contribution to the project.
The mosaic installation was made by students from the Mackay District Special School and Victoria Park State School, with the support of Disability Services staff.
Students from local schools had played an active role in the playground’s planning and design process since its beginnings in 2007, contributing their ideas via workshops and activity books.
In mid 2010, Mackay’s Bunnings Warehouse joined in and donated materials for a 1.2m x 80cm mosaic, including its design which featured children of different abilities playing together, side-by-side.
Students unveiled the artwork during opening celebrations in August 2010, alongside Disability Services Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk, Mackay MP Tim Mulherin and Cr Karen May of Mackay Regional Council.
The colourful addition completed the picture for what had already proven to be a hugely-popular community resource.
