Students adopt playground as second classroom

Students from Mount Isa Special School were quick to make the most of the city's new Family Fun Park, adopting its all abilities playground as a second classroom.

Soon after being special guests at its opening celebrations, a senior leisure group of about nine students commenced weekly visits to the play space, followed soon after by a regular junior sensory program for four students.

As school principal Sheina Treuel explained, these programs represented the first in a series of curriculum units to be developed around the park's different play elements.

“[The units focused on] exploring our local environment, so that the students can learn and grow through play,” Ms Treuel said.

Students also helped to design the play space by providing feedback to council regarding equipment selection, and later helped to paint a community mural on-site.
