Trainee Bruce Paul Waia helped put the finishing touches on the Seafront All Abilities Playground.

Indigenous trainees helped construct the Seafront All Abilities Playground as part of a program designed to provide on-the-job training and skills development.

As trainee Bruce Paul Waia explained, working on the project was a highly rewarding experience.

“It was great to work on such a wonderful, innovative community project such as this,” Bruce said.

“The best moment was seeing children, many with a disability, playing and laughing in the playground.

“Not only did I learn some great things on-site, I also came away feeling that I had really contributed to making a difference in the lives of others.”

Fraser Coast Regional Council hired 10 indigenous men under the Scrub Hill-based ‘Dhugamin CDEP – Skilling Queenslanders for Work’ partnership to work on several projects, including the playground, mid 2010.

Working alongside council's project team, the men learnt new skills in the areas of landscaping and construction.
