Council’s David Hayward (right) and community members share ideas during the project’s design phase.

Leading the creation of the Texas All Abilities Playground was council’s Economic and Community Development Officer David Hayward. David shares his thoughts in an open letter below.

For me, the community participation model used in the design of our all abilities playground was a very rewarding experience.

The team from Disability Services and designers from The Play Works were terrific to work with. Although it took some time to gather and review all the community ideas for the playground, the end result has been well worth the extra attention paid to consultation.

We now have a unique playground that offers exciting play experiences and interaction for children of all abilities. The feedback from the Texas community has been very positive and everyone is very proud of the play area that reflects the identity of Texas.

Designing play and recreational areas that are inclusive and cater for all sections of the community increases the use of the facility. Since its opening, there has been constant use by all members of the community, from young parents and children to groups of older people who appreciate the site’s accessibility features and relaxed environment.

I feel that the ‘all abilities’ model should be used in the design of all playgrounds because it fosters a real sense of community ownership, and provides play and recreation areas that truly meet the needs of individual communities.
