Student storybook a real page turner

Checking out the Perspex storybook illustrated by students from Annandale State School during opening celebrations in 2009.

Year 1 students from Annandale State School provided illustrations for a special Perspex storybook located in a storytime area at the heart of the Riverway All Abilities Playground.

The illustrations depicted a crocodile and turtle adaptation of the Three Billy Goats Gruff fairytale and were among a number of colourful community creations designed to capture people’s hearts and minds.

Townsville City Council also conducted other activities, such as pot plant painting and footpath stenciling, to give other residents an opportunity to leave their mark. A vibrant dragon fly entrance stands as another permanent symbol of this participatory approach.

The state project encouraged the involvement of community members during construction as a way of strengthening a sense of community ownership and connectedness to the play spaces.

Riverway’s unique storybook took the concept a step further by also giving future generations an opportunity to contribute their own stories at a later date, helping to ensure community remains at the heart of the playground for years to come.
