Malu Os is a Special Education Unit situated at Tagai P–7 Campus on Thursday Island (TI). It supports students with disabilities attending Tagai State College. It has three special education trained teachers that service the primary and high schools as well as the Torres Strait islands. For the outer islands, they provide a fly-in, fly-out outreach service and work with teachers from those communities.
One of the aims of the unit is to teach their children to become self-sufficient. They do this by providing equipment for learning, adjusting curriculum to suit the individual child and offering alternative programs focused on life skills and community access. Tagai Campus acknowledges culture is important for all students and Malu Os has incorporated this into their daily curriculum.
The special education facility which houses Malu Os on TI is purpose-built. It has a kitchen, office and large classrooms. On the grounds is the vegetable garden that is maintained by the Malu Os children. This garden also encourages mainstream students to assist with helping. This experience creates a positive and authentic experience with working with children with difficulties.
Malu Os students are the eco warriors of Tagai State College. These students participate in clean beach day and the children send data to Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to assist with their research.
