Henry, Jane and Katie use disability services. Through their stories we learn about the support they receive from their services, how they can have their say and what the Queensland Disability Service Standards mean to them.

Henry and his Mum and Dad are sitting in their lounge room. Henry is reading a brochure.

Narrator:
Henry has moved to a new area and needs to find a new service.
Henry's Mum:
What are you up to Henry?
Henry:
I'm looking at this. It's about the new service.

Henry is at his new service and meeting his new support worker, Carlos.

Carlos:
Hi Henry.
Narrator:
Henry's new support worker Carlos helps him to do things in the community.

Henry and Carlos are sitting at a table, looking at a calendar.

Henry:
Hey Carlos. It's my birthday soon.
Carlos:
Yeah, you're right. OK, so how can we tell your friends about your birthday?
Henry:
We can invite them.

Henry and his friends are celebrating his birthday party. Katie gives Henry a present.

Henry:
Thanks Katie.

Everyone is wishing Henry a happy birthday.

Everyone:
Happy birthday dear Henry. Happy birthday to you.

Henry and Carlos are in the car and Carlos is about to leave Henry alone in there. Henry does not want to be left alone.

Narrator:
It's not always smooth sailing for Henry.
Carlos:
You wait in the car.
Henry:
But I want to go with you.
Carlos:
I said wait in the car, Henry.
Henry:
Carlos!

Henry and his friend visit the service to make a complaint.

Narrator:
But as problems arise the service helps him to resolve them.
Henry:
I wanted to make a complaint.
Service:
We want to hear if there are problems. We want to work with you to fix them.

Jane is meeting with her support worker, Mardi and the service in the house that she shares with Katie.

Narrator:
Jane shares a house with Katie, and they have a support worker called Mardi. Their service works with them to meet their needs.
Jane:
I would like to go shopping.
Mardi:
OK.
Service:
Are you happy with that Jane?

Jane comes into the room where Mardi and Katie are sitting. Jane is crying.

Narrator:
Like all of us, Jane has her ups and downs, but Mardi makes sure that Jane gets the privacy and respect to which she's entitled.
Mardi:
Are you crying? Oh. Katie. Jane and I need to have a private talk. Just us two.
Katie:
Oh, alright.
Mardi:
Now, then. It's just you and me.

Jane and Mardi are at the music store. Storekeeper is directing all the questions to Mardi, even though Jane is the one who is buying the CD.

Narrator:
Jane likes to do things for herself in the community. However sometimes it doesn't quite go to plan.

Storekeeper directs his questions to Mardi.

Storekeeper:
Now, can I help you?
Mardi:
Uh. No. It's Jane who wants to buy something.

In these situations, Mardi is there to help people understand that Jane is an important and valued person.

Storekeeper directs his questions to Jane.
