Significant changes to the way specialist disability services are delivered came into effect from July 2011.
The changes are part of the Growing Stronger program of reform to build a better specialist disability service system which provides a fairer and more transparent way for Queenslanders with a disability to access support and specialist services.
Improvements will include:
- a new way for prioritising requests for support which are tailored to each person’s specific needs
- a process of review to ensure that the services and support people receive continue to provide the support they need
- changes to service provider funding which ensure we are purchasing services that best reflect the needs and goals of the Queenslanders accessing them.
To support these changes, program structures (Post School Services, Family Support Program and Adult Lifestyle Support Program—all which have different access criteria) will be discontinued from July 2011. This means that the support previously only offered through each will potentially be available for all people with a disability and their families. Despite these changes, it is important to note that for current clients, supports will remain consistent with what is currently received.
Queenslanders with a disability who receive supports directly from a government-funded agency, but are not registered with Disability Services, should register their details by phoning their local Disability and Community Care Services centre.
