The Centre of Excellence for Behaviour Support (the Centre) is a partnership between the Department of Communities and the University of Queensland. The Centre is leading the integration of theory and evidence-based practices in positive behaviour support to assist service providers to deliver better services to adults with a cognitive or intellectual disability in Queensland.
The Centre’s vision is to position Queensland as a world class leader in research, policy and practice in positive behaviour support. The centre aims to:
- create a culture of collaborative action
- conduct research that identifies effective practices and explores issues
- foster the collection and analysis of information to form an evidence-base for policy and practice
- build the capacity of individuals (service users, staff, carers) in the disability and other sectors
- promote information use and sharing
- clarify and align the Centre's strategic priorities for activity
- support the consistent use of effective practices in supporting people with an intellectual or cognitive disability who exhibit challenging behaviours.
The Centre has already made a number of significant contributions to research in positive behaviour support. These include:
- an evaluation of the positive behaviour intervention model for improving the quality of life for adults with an intellectual disability
- framework development for creating a comprehensive research agenda
- confirmation of quality of life as a real measure of service delivery
- establishment of consent and meaningful participation in research by people with intellectual disability
- a reduction of key risks associated with the use of physical restraint.
