The Disability Services Act 2006 safeguards the rights of Queenslanders with a disability. It also provides a positive behaviour support system to improve the quality of life of adults with an intellectual or cognitive disability who exhibit challenging behaviour.
In Queensland, the law requires disability service providers to conduct an assessment of the adult and develop a positive behaviour support plan before considering, or gaining approval or consent for the use of restrictive practices.
Further information about the law and authorisation of the use of restrictive practices is available in the overview of amendments
More detailed information is contained in the department's policies and procedures for the use of restrictive practices.
