Service provider training

Functional assessment and positive behaviour intervention

If you work in the disability services sector, you might be interested in the training in functional assessment and positive behaviour intervention offered by the Centre of Excellence for Behaviour Support.

Am I eligible to attend?

This course is open to anyone working in the disability services sector supporting an individual with an intellectual or cognitive disability who exhibits challenging behaviour, who would like to gain a deeper understanding of positive behaviour support and use it in their work.

What will I learn?

By attending the course, you will learn:

  • how to collect the information necessary to conduct a functional assessment
  • how to summarise that information
  • how to develop interventions based on the assessment
  • strategies to evaluate the effectiveness of the plan.

Upon completion, you will be equipped to carry out a Contextual Assessment Inventory and a functional assessment based on interviews and direct observation. You will also be able to assist in developing and implementing a positive behaviour support plan and in evaluating the plan.

How long does it take?

Training is conducted across four days, with each day of training held every two weeks (total duration is eight weeks).

Between each session you will be required to collect information that can be used in the next session. Trainers will consult with you between sessions to answer any questions and provide support during the information gathering process.

I'm interested, what next?

To get the maximum benefit from the course, we recommend two or three staff members from the same organisation attend and work as a team. Together, you will work with the trainers to develop the functional assessment and the positive behaviour intervention plan for an individual supported by your service. You will need to be familiar with the individual as the course builds on knowledge and skills already acquired.
