Tim Mahon takes a break from his caring role by working on his long board designs.
Tim Mahon admits being a carer is not easy.
His wife has a mental illness and for years he juggled caring for her, raising their children and working in aged care to make ends meet.
“About two years ago, my wife's health deteriorated to the point where I stopped working to become her full-time carer,” Tim says.
Tim says he often feels his decision to become a carer is misunderstood — even by close friends.
“But I try to ignore any negativity and focus on my role,” he says.
To help cope with the stress of being a full-time carer, Tim tries to find time for himself — usually from around 11pm — when he works on his new long board design.
He hopes this interest will become another means to support his family as he prepares to launch his own long board brand, 'Mudjimba Cruisers'.
“Life is not always easy, but I love my wife and children and am determined to do whatever it takes to make their situation better,” he says.

Carer Action Plan launched
The Queensland Carer Action Plan 2011-14, launched in October, focuses on how the Queensland Government will deliver services to meet the varying needs of Queensland’s estimated 500,000 carers.
It is based on three areas: recognition and respect for carers, support for carers and carers’ participation.
Identified priorities include improving carers’ health and wellbeing, increasing community access for carers and supporting carer participation in education, training and the workforce.
To order a printed copy of the plan call the Office for Carers on 1800 177 120 or email officeforcarers@disability.qld.gov.au.
