Coaches of younger school children harness their energy to build a skills-base.
People working with school children can now receive accreditation for coaching through the Queensland Government's Get Active Queensland Accreditation Program (GAQAP).
The program provides teachers, school sport volunteers, tertiary and senior secondary school students with free training that can lead to recognised accreditation in coaching, officiating and sports first aid.
Participants can choose from a range of sports coaching, officiating and first aid courses, with each course running for one day.
Twenty GAQAP events are held across Queensland throughout the year, with an average of 200 participants at each event.
Relief teacher Wendy Coghill, one of 150 teachers who attended a traditional Indigenous games course said she found the event personally rewarding.
“I really enjoyed the day as I learnt so much about Indigenous games, as we participated in and presented quite a number of them. We also received a great book about the games, the origin of each game and its cultural significance,” she said.
“Not only do I now have a lot more possibilities for primary school students, but as a non-Indigenous participant I am more culturally aware of a number of aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander life.”
More than 130 students have completed the courses with 83 gaining Level One sports trainer accreditation and 48 achieving Sports First Aid accreditation.
