Rod Lonsdale has previously received a Premier's Award for his work for Hervey Bay 60 and Better Club.
There’s still time to nominate someone you know whose outstanding volunteer work deserves recognition in the prestigious annual Premier's Awards for Queensland Seniors.
Nominations for the 2011 awards close on Friday, 17 June, and winners will be announced during Seniors Week 2011 from 20-28 August.
Now in their 26th year, the awards serve to highlight the work of older everyday heroes who go quietly about enriching others’ lives, often without expecting thanks or praise.
Their promotion this year has featured three past winners Rod Lonsdale (pictured), Val Rooney and Ernie Hoolihan.
Rod has been the driving force behind the Hervey Bay 60 & Better Club for more than a decade.
President of the club for most of this time, his tireless work has resulted in its membership increasing more than tenfold, attracted by a huge range of activities that range from computer tuition to tai-chi classes, to square dancing and yoga.
Val Rooney’s many voluntary roles include being vice president of the Logan West Community Care group, which provides support for seniors and people with a disability.
Townsville’s Ernie Hoolihan is a tireless advocate for Indigenous people, working to establish the Aboriginal Advancement League and the Aboriginal and Islander Health Service in the city.
