New proof-of-age card

A more secure, reliable and durable Adult Proof of Age Card to replace the existing laminated Card 18+ is now available.

The new card is ideal for people who do not hold a driver licence and do not want to carry around their passport or other documents.

Along with other new licence and authority cards, it will be progressively available as it is rolled out across the state.

To find out if your local licensing centre is issuing the new cards or for more information visit Transport And Main Roads' website or call 13 23 80.

Recognition for everyday heroes

Queensland Week from 4-13 June will be dedicated to recognising the selfless heroes of the devastating summer floods and Cyclone Yasi.

Communities have nominated their own heroes and they will be recognised at events in flood-affected communities across the state during Queensland Week.

"There is a hero in every community and a story of ordinary people surviving extraordinary events shared on every street corner," a spokesperson for the Department of Premier and Cabinet says.

For information about these events, go to the Premier's website and click on Events.

Make your complaint count

The Queensland Ombudsman is encouraging young Queenslanders to make their complaints count.

If young people have a problem with their university, local council or a government agency and aren’t sure how to resolve the issue, the Ombudsman may be able to help.

The Queensland Ombudsman is an independent watchdog and can investigate complaints about universities and TAFE institutes, including the appeals process, student enrolments, access to courses and university rules.

For more information phone 1800 068 908 or go to the Ombudsman's website.

Be alert for bogus collectors

Queenslanders should stay alert for bogus charity collectors and can readily check on collectors’ bona fides, says the Office of Fair Trading.

The office says an online register can provide a "quick indication" about whether a charity is registered to fundraise in Queensland or if an association is incorporated in this state.

The register, prepared by Queensland Charities and Associations, is available at Fair Trading's website - click on check-a-charity-or-association.

Legitimate street and door-to-door charity collectors should wear prominent identification, issue receipts and be able to produce a current written authority from the association for which they claim to be collecting.

April Fool's Day warning

The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service marked April Fool’s Day with a reminder that smoke alarms can only save lives if they are primed.

"Smoke alarms play a vital role in providing early warning of fire, but they’re not much use if they disconnected, pulled down or the battery is flat," a spokesperson says.

"If you have not changed your battery consider doing so today. Many people lose their lives as a result of not having working smoke alarms."
