Borrowing rather than buying has always been a great option — particularly if it’s free.

Local book libraries pioneered the concept, but now there’s a new option for people wanting to try out a new sport or activity.

Families, individuals, schools, sports clubs and youth groups are borrowing bats, balls, boxing gloves and other equipment free of charge from Queensland’s new sports equipment libraries — just like borrowing a book from a library.

In addition to traditional sports equipment, the libraries lend exercise equipment such as hand weights and skipping ropes and instructional DVDs
for those who don’t have the time or money to go to a gym.

The sports equipment library at Crestmead Police and Citizens Youth Club (PCYC), south of Brisbane, lends equipment to a wide cross-section of the community, helping people who can’t afford to purchase equipment to enjoy sport and recreation.

Crestmead PCYC youth worker Beth Henry says borrowers include families, students, schools and vacation care organisations.

Beth says members of the area’s Youth Alliance have borrowed gear to take on camping expeditions and participants in the PCYC’s Friday ‘drop in night’ have borrowed equipment to play lacrosse, bocce, croquet, ultimate frisbee and floor quoits.

“Because equipment is free, it’s a very inclusive program,” she says.

“And having such a range of equipment encourages people to try new activities and games, and develop a range of skills.”

The Department of Communities (Sport and Recreation Services) has set up sports equipment libraries in Cairns, Cloncurry, Cooktown, Crestmead, Cunnamulla, Eidsvold, Gympie, Inala, Mount Isa, Murgon, Rockhampton and Townsville.
