Battlers gain access to no-interest loans

More Queenslanders will have access to a helping hand with the expansion of a no-interest loan scheme throughout the state.

The loans are available to low-income people for essential goods and services, like household items and health aids.

A new state coordinator with Good Shepherd Youth and Family Services was due to begin work early this year, supporting and training community organisations to provide the no-interest loans.

Good Shepherd already has 30 trained and accredited community organisations providing the loans across Queensland.

The Queensland Government provided the organisation with $120,000 last November to hire the new coordinator.

Through the loan scheme, accredited local organisations are able to access the $5.5 million loan capital allocated to Queensland through the Australian Government and National Australia Bank.

Individuals can receive up to $1200 over 12 to 18 months without interest. Borrowers can use their loan to purchase essential household items or for other essential needs like health aids or education costs.

Interested community organisations can contact Good Shepherd’s Karen Denham on 0458 973 022 or email k.denham@goodshepvic.org.au. More information is available by visiting the Office of Fair Trading website.
