Creative challenge goes out to young 'uns

Youth Week 2009 junior competition winners (from left) Brisbane's Knox and Flaxton Wheeler, and their younger brother Xane, play up a storm.

Young Queenslanders are being encouraged to exercise their creative talents and “own it” during National Youth Week 1–10 April.

The Department of Communities supports a range of events and activities during National Youth Week, including an online creative competition with the theme “own it”.

The online competition for 12-25 year-olds offers prizes and is open to any form of artistic expression.

Last year, for example, winners and runners-up in the junior and senior sections included songs, a painting and a Lego animation.

Junior section winners Brisbane brothers Knox and Flaxton Wheeler admit it was “a bit of a shock” when they won the competition with an original song, ‘ASAP’, about one young person reaching out to another.

“It was great to succeed against some really talented entries,” Flaxton says.

“We definitely think young people should enter as entering online was easy and the prize was excellent. We picked up $1500 worth of recording gear that would have taken us a long time to save up for.”

Entries to the competition are open from 1 March to 30 April.
