Help available to flood-hit sports clubs

Flood-affected Bundaberg residents turned to staff at the city's recovery centre - normally the PCYC centre - including this householder, who was assisted by the Department of Communities' Tony Wood.

Department of Communities funding is available to enable sport and recreation clubs repair facilities affected by flooding and other natural disasters.

The Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery Program was established for just this purpose.

Clubs in declared areas can apply for grants of up to $20,000 to repair infrastructure, while grants of up to $5000 are available to help replace operational items such as sport and recreation equipment, white goods and canteen items.

On 10 January the Queensland Government announced that business development officers from the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation  will visit businesses affected by the floods to help them to get back on their feet.

A department spokesman said that while special disaster flood assistance grants of up to $25,000 were available to small businesses in many areas, the Government would provide further expertise and advice to help businesses recover as quickly as possible.

"Every business is different, every business has been affected by the floods in a slightly different way and that's why officers will be calling on businesses individually, once flood waters recede."
