Sharon Finnan is passing her sporting knowledge and experience on to school students.

After a couple of decades passing a ball around the netball court, former Australian netball star Sharon Finnan is passing her sporting knowledge and experience on to school students.

The former Commonwealth Games champion works as an Indigenous mentor and area manager with community-based organisation Primary After School Sports (PASS) Australia in Cairns. She delivers Certificate II training in sport and recreation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teenagers at four high schools.

“I enjoy my role immensely as it allows me to indulge in my passion for sport while passing on my skills and knowledge to others,” Sharon said.

“Engaging active sport-oriented teens in something they love also serves to keep them at school which is a great outcome too.”

To gain her own job, Sharon needed more than game play: PASS wanted formal qualifications.

Sharon turned to Skilling Solutions Queensland (SSQ). Working with a consultant, Sharon was able to identify which qualification best met her career and training goals. SSQ then analysed Sharon’s workplace skills and applied recognition of prior learning (RPL).

To her delight, Sharon’s experience became a Certificate III in Community Recreation, enabling her to train high school students in sports leadership.

“Like lots of people, I did not realise that what I’d done could turn into a real qualification,” Sharon said.
