2004
1 January. The Housing Act 2003 takes effect, officially marking the end of the Queensland Housing Commission. From this date, the State of Queensland, through the Department of Housing, assumes the work and responsibilities of the Commission.
In January 2004, the Housing Act 2003 took effect and officially marked the end of 58 years of the Queensland Housing Commission.
The Housing Act 2003 was developed to meet the needs of the people of Queensland today and in the future. The new legislation recognises the Government's role in providing direct housing assistance and provides the flexibility needed to deliver innovative programs and solutions. It embraces the change, growth and development the Commission underwent since 1945 and provides the legal backing to take these services into the future.
The new legislation has been a turning point that provides an opportunity to reflect on close to 60 years of hard work, innovation and commitment to meeting housing need in Queensland , through times of hardship and prosperity. It also allows the department to embrace the changing direction its activities have taken in recent years and to pursue new partnerships and solutions.
Realising the Queensland Department of Housing's vision to 'improve people's lives through housing and community renewal' continues today and draws on the foundation laid by the Queensland Housing Commission.
This vision is being delivered through a responsive housing system and a client-focused, innovative and flexible organisation that is approaching the future with the confidence to provide sustainable housing outcomes for Queenslanders.
