The department continued to improve access to safe, secure, affordable and appropriate housing for Queenslanders in need, and worked with partners to deliver sustainable solutions addressing local community issues.

Social housing refers to housing funded or subsidised by the department to assist households who were unable to access or retain affordable or appropriate housing in the private housing market.
The department assists low–to–moderate income households to access and sustain private rental accommodation and home ownership.
In addition to the activity that occurs under the previous two goals, which also contribute to this goal, the department helps to build sustainable communities.
With the abolishment of the Department of Housing on 26 March 2009 as a result of machinery-of-Government changes, the core functions of the former department have transitioned to the Department of Communities.
